About Us

The Mid-State Mustangs Youth Ice Hockey Association provides opportunities for the area's most dedicated and talented hockey players looking to take their game to a higher level. Through a proven formula rich in tradition, family, commitment, and player development, the Mustangs look to help players become better as a team, as players and individuals in the community and in the classroom.

History

The Mid-State Mustangs have developed a program that is rooted in success. Founded in 2004 as a tournament team for higher level players in our region, the program eventually involved into a full season program providing a high level of training, development and competition for serious hockey players.

The first year the Mid-State Mustangs went year round was in the 2008-09 season. After that transition, the Mustangs have had tremendous success highlighted by 11 Western Pennsylvania State Championships, 1 Mid-Am District Championship, and 2 USA Hockey National Championships. In addition, Mustang teams have also won 2 Silver Sticks Regional Qualifier Tournaments as well as numerous other tournaments.

In addition, Mustang Alumni Sam Lafferty took his career through prep school and became the first player from this area to be selected in the NHL draft when he was selected in the 4th round 113th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins. After a 4 year collegiate career at D1 Brown University, Sam is currently playing for the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins of the AHL.

We hope to continue an atmosphere of high level hockey that promotes development in an enjoyable, rewarding and challenging environment.

Our Philosophy

The Mid-State Mustangs are a regional based ice hockey organization designed to compete at the highest level of Tier II in USA Hockey. Located in Altoona, PA, the goal of the Mustangs is to attract the best players from the Greater Altoona area and surrounding areas including, but not limited to, Johnstown, State College and Indiana to compete in AA USA Hockey events.

The Mustangs program has been built on a foundation of individual and team goals. As a team, the ultimate goal of the Mustangs is to instill in its players the concept that the “whole” is more important than any of its “individual” components. Players are taught to sacrifice for the betterment of the team and strive to always put the team ahead of any individual goals or accomplishments.

When focusing on the individual player, the Mustangs program focuses on improving the player in all aspects of the game including on-ice skill development, off-ice training concepts and proper nutrition. Furthermore, the program also strides to produce outstanding young men and women who perform well in the class room as well as become valued members of the community.

Through these team based and individual based concepts, it is a goal of the Mustangs program to help advance players within the sport to higher levels of hockey such as prep school, junior or college hockey. While the Mustangs have produced teams that have won a number of championships at the State and National level, it recognizes that winning is a result of, and must not be achieved in spite, of proper player development.

To accomplish the goals of the Mustang program, the Mid-State Mustangs look to offer the very best players from our region the opportunity to play together on a higher level team. This environment affords these players an opportunity to compete at a high level thus pushing the player to elevate and improve their game.
